Grades for bus-bars and terminal blocks for EV
Offering the grades for high voltage insulating materials to support downsizing of conducting components

In order to support the downsizing of parts and narrowing of the pitch of conducting terminals, the product grades of ARLEN with high insulation performance and tracking resistance were developed. They are achieving high reliability in high voltage applications for power electronics and motors for EVs.

Associated with the downsizing of EV-related parts and an increase in operating voltage, it is becoming difficult to secure the creepage distance between bus-bars. ARLEN high functional resin achieves superior insulation against high voltage and prevents tracking between electrical conductors, which shows the true value.

01

Superior insulation performance and tracking resistance realize the downsizing of parts

In the case of insulation materials with low tracking performance, the extension of the distance between terminals and the creation of ribs were required. ARLEN with high tracking resistance enables omission of ribs and downsizing of parts, leading to an enhancement in the design freedom.

Tracking breakdown phenomenon and CTI

The principle of tracking breakdown phenomenon

Tracking breakdown is an insulation breakdown phenomenon where the insulant surfaces that are contaminated for any reason are carbonized by micro discharges, and electrically conducting paths are formed. CTI (Comparative Tracking Index) is an index that shows the difficulty of the occurrence of tracking breakdown phenomenon.

03

The reason for excellent tracking resistance of ARLEN lies in the molecular structure

Wholly aromatic polymer (example)

Wholly aromatic polymers with a lot of aromatic rings are likely to be carbonized due to their molecular structures and are characterized by being likely to cause tracking breakdown. Since PPS and LCP belong to the category of whole aromatic polymers, they are likely to be carbonized and are low in CTI.

Semi-aromatic polymersARLEN™

On the other hand, ARLEN belongs to the category of semi-aromatic polymers. This high functional resin not only have high heat resistance and reliability, which are the characteristics of aromatic polymers but also can achieve high tracking resistance. The CTI is 600, which is at the PLC 0 level where tracking breakdown phenomenon is least likely to occur among six levels stipulated in UL standards. This high functional resin belongs to the Material Group I that enables the shortest creepage distance between conducting terminals.

ARLEN contributes to realizing the downsizing of products as a high voltage insulation material with excellent tracking resistance.
