As the first round of the Mitsui Chemicals Group’s Protecting Our World Heritage Project series, Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. (President & CEO: Tsutomu Tannowa) and Mitsui Chemicals Industrial Products Ltd. (President: Shu Saito) donated benches in September 2014 to Yakushima Town (Mayor:Koji Araki), which sought to increase the attractiveness of the island as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site.
These benches were made by Yakushima cedar craftsman, using thinning cedar lumber. The benches are applied with the wood protective paint NONROT™.
As a World Natural Heritage site, Yakushima Town receives a number of tourists from home and abroad. However, it lacked benches where a visitor could relax, admire the beautiful scenery, or take a break, and the town had recognized this as an issue. Consequently, this project got underway.
With the cooperation of Yakushima Town, Mitsui Chemicals and Mitsui Chemicals Industrial Products created a video, introducing how the benches were manufactured and repainted as part of the CSR activities. Please see our activity, as well as Yakushima’s beautiful nature.
About NONROT™
With ultra water-repellency, UV resistance, anti-septic / anti-fungal / anti-insect properties, NONROT™ is highly safe paint which maximizes the breathability (humidity control) that wood naturally possesses. It does not disturb the breathing of wood, allowing it to release the refreshing wood aroma.
