The Gan-Ally Declaration Awards* is a new award scheme created by Gan-Ally-Bu (founders: Daisuke Iwase and Satoko Kono), a private sector project that focuses on tackling problems faced by people who continue to work while undergoing treatment for cancer. The awards aim to encourage workplaces to be more accommodating of employees who have cancer, thereby creating a society where people can feel comfortable continuing to work while receiving treatment.

The scheme recognizes outstanding initiatives by companies that have declared themselves to be allies of cancer sufferers and made a commitment to providing a workplace that enables such individuals to carry on working through their treatment. Entrants are required to submit details of specific initiatives for consideration by the project’s founders, who hope that sharing the know-how of such organizations will result in a society where cancer patients can readily continue to work during their course of treatment.

Mitsui Chemicals’ Gold Award was conferred in recognition of the company’s efforts to promote early detection of cancer by incorporating cancer screening into regular medical examinations and carrying this out in mass screenings. Also highly commended was the framework through which Mitsui Chemicals’ industrial physicians collaborate with the Human Resources Division and worksites to find the right balance of work without imposing an excessive burden on the individual worker.

Based on the philosophy that healthy employees make for a healthy company, Mitsui Chemicals will continue to position employee health as a key management issue and take the initiative in promoting activities that support good health among all employees of the Mitsui Chemicals Group.
