Addressing climate change and plastic waste
Solving climate change and the problems of plastics requires a transformation to a circular economy that recycles and reuses resources, and it is crucial to view and address these two issues as one. At Mitsui Chemicals, we focus on recycling and biomass strategies incorporating the entire value chain, as we promote a circular economy model.
Participation in the AEPW
It is vital that the chemical industry take initiative and build cooperation across the entire value chain to address the problems of plastic waste. The Alliance to End Plastic Waste is a combined effort of global companies involved in the value chain, including chemical manufacturers, plastic processors, retailers, and waste management companies, and we support these efforts.
Efforts as a company in Asia, a region with significant plastic waste outflow
Japan's chemical industry has long promoted the three ‘R’s (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle); I believe that this management method will serve as a model that can contribute to solving the problems of plastic waste. It is important that Japan share its knowledge with the region, among other efforts to help address the outflow of plastic waste.
Our role after the coronavirus is contained
Even after the coronavirus is eventually contained, there will still be major social issues that the world must address, such as climate change and plastics in the ocean. Our role, proposing solutions in the fields where we can contribute, remains the same as ever, and we will continue to promote the efforts of the AEPW.
